Aging can present challenges and become difficult to adjust to. As we age, our bones lose tissue, our muscles decrease in size and our brains cognitive functionality changes. These effects of aging can reduce the ability to partake in particular activities, especially for senior citizens. However, there are therapeutic activities that assist with improving an individual’s health and functionality. Therapeutic activities are soothing movements that support the well-being of seniors, in spite of their health conditions.
Cognitive Benefit of Art Therapy
Cognitive behaviors involve conscious intellectual activity that can be increased with arts & crafts. When an older individual is exposed to these activities, it provides mental stimulation. Stimulating the mind can trigger long-forgotten memories, which can be really helpful for those suffering from memory loss. The American Art Therapy Association explains that art therapy “is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness.” Art therapy, among various other forms of therapy, is part of our holistic approach to senior living at Renaissance Home Health Care.
Emotional Benefit of Music Therapy
Most activities that we do everyday can provide self-awareness and a sense of value. Music therapy activities are cooperative and engaging in nature including things such as sing alongs, rhythm games and dancing, which can all be enriching to seniors. Not to mention, group activities can assist to preserve or increase an individual’s social skills. Successfully engaging in these activities can provide a sense of competence while enhancing self-esteem.
Physical Benefit of Movement Therapy
Physical therapy focuses on exercises to assist seniors in recovering or improving their physical functionality. According to NCBI, “regular physical activity contributes to the primary and secondary prevention of several chronic diseases,” which could be as simple as increasing daily movement levels. Physical activity can improve appetite, sleep and mood, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. At our adult day care centers, we offer a variety of recreational activities for all seniors as part of our adult day care programs and home care services, specially tailored for their individual needs. Our caregivers not only provide the care and attention every participant deserves, but they also have ample experience in motivating seniors to exercise.
At Renaissance Home Health Care and Adult Day Services, we offer a full range of individualized services that promote social, physical, and emotional well-being. Our Executive Director, Eileen Parenti explains that, “We provide therapeutic programs to ensure that seniors are improving physically, mentally, and emotionally no matter their age. Both home care and adult day care services help intrigue the mind, move the body, and inspire the spirit of our clients.” Our goal is to help seniors become as independent with the best quality of life as possible through our programs, therapies and other Signature Touch Programs.
